Maria Lanner: time to go

Our Melbourne blogger says goodbye to her second hometown

It is almost time to go.

I have one more hour left here at The Five Mile Press and I am now starting to clean up around my desk, which has grown into the desk next to me and to the desk behind. I was just counting all the books that I have been working on here and come up to the amazing number of 34 titles! It has been a pleasure working here and I will miss both the job and everybody here a lot.

Maria Lanner: Countdown

Maria Lanner waxes nostalgic about all the things she wants to do in her last week in Melbourne

The countdown has begun. We try to ignore it, but that's not going very wellit's creeping up. We only have one week left here on the other side of the earth, for now! When we came here, I never thought I would consider coming back, but you never know, and now there is even a continent we call home. The fewer days we have left, the longer the list of things we want to do again gets! How should we deal with everything? We can't, but it doesn't matter, because we will probably be back!

Maria by car

Last weekend we decided to take a trip down the Great Ocean road. We borrowed a car from our friends who are on vacation, it's a thirsty and load vintage land Rover.

We got in the car, on the wrong sides of the car, on the wrong side of the road! But it worked out well. The distances are amazing here. We did not get very far the first day. Right before it got dark, and after a few hours of driving we decided to stop in Lourne, to find a hotelroom for the night. We took the first one we could find! It was great and they had a wonderful breakfast.

Maria Lanner: A Small World

Our Melbourne GROW blogger takes a trip to Sydney

We have gone on a little vacation. I took off work and we jetted off to Sydney. We stayed in a small hotel in the middle of the action, pretty close to everything. It is a great city! Much larger and more intense than our little Melbourne. If you're a tourist in Sydney, the first thing you do is visit the opera house. We did so, too, of course. Everything you see in pictures is so unreal when you're standing next to it—what a magnificent creature!

We had meeting with an old friend of mine, whom I went to high school with in the U.S. twenty years ago!

Maria Lanner: Sunny Side Up

From Stockholm to Melbourne: our GROW blogger swaps snow for sun

My theme for today is the sun! Every year I wonder how I shall get through the dark winters in Sweden. I am not a fan of skiing, layers of clothes or any other winter activity. I don't really like to go on a sled either, even though it can be really fun sometimes watching Molly do it.

But this season, I managed the winter just fine! In December, I spent a warm week on th Cape Islands and now three months in Melbourne, Australia.

Lots of sun, Maria

Maria Lanner: Fires and an Earthquake

From Stockholm to Melbourne: our GROW blogger in Melbourne marvels at the forest fires' effects

So much can happen in Melbourne. One week, there's a storm notice via e-mail, and everyone packs up quickly, turns off the computer and goes home.  Another day, the temperature goes up to 45 degrees.  Another day it can drop to 20 degrees in half an hour.  And yesterday, there was an earthquake.

We were sitting in the office and had been meeting in the building when suddenly it began to shake.  We were looking at each other and wondering what was happening. It hasn't happened again, but we were all shaken right after.

From Stockholm to Melbourne: this graphic designer is enjoying the summer sales in sunny Australia

My name is Maria Lanner. In Stockholm, I work as a graphic designer for the magazine mama. Right now, I am working for The Five Mile Press in Melbourne, Australia. It is a children's book publisher, and they specialize in books with different shapes and formats. I am staying here in Melbourne with my husband Michael and my daughter Molly. As you can see in my photo, I was allowed to have one accessory and I chose my daughter! Next week my accessory will be my husband.
