Templar Publishing is a leading UK children's publisher and was acquired by the Bonnier Group in September 2008.  It currently employs 46 people and is headed by Amanda Wood, Managing Director.  Its base is in Dorking, Surrey which offers staff the flexibility to live within the picturesque town and surrounding villages, or take a short commute from the excitement of London and all it has to offer.                      

Templar has become one of the world's most respected publishers and packagers of illustrated children's fiction, novelty and picture books.

Templar has a reputation for innovation and creativity, both in own publishing and in branded products for other companies.  The company is probably best known for the groundbreaking Ology series, which was first launched in 2003 with Dragonology.  This has become a global brand with nine core titles in print in an additional two titles to be published in 2010.  There is a substantial licensing programme around the Ology series that includes board games, toys, computer games and a movie.

What the work consist of:

Design Development

  • Develop spread-by-spread digital layouts as briefed by the project editor. Layouts to include sketches of proposed illustrations and positional scans of artwork and novelty items.
  • Revise layouts if necessary, based on input from the Company, customer, author or project editor.
  • Develop cover concepts and revise if necessary, based on input from the Company, customer, author or project editor.
  • Ensure adherence to the templar design and pre-press production policy.

Text

  • Provide Quark and Illustrator files to the project editor for editing.

Illustrations

  • Prepare illustrator's briefs including project editor's brief and any accompanying reference material, layout with sketch included and design comments.
  • Liaise with illustrators (who will be contracted by the Company) to ensure that illustrations are appropriate and of acceptable quality.
    Review illustrators' conceptual sketches and detailed roughs for artistic capability and preliminary scan to ensure fit to layout.
  • Return combined comments from project editor, the Company and designer to illustrator for revision.
  • Review final illustrations for artistic content and accuracy.


Preparation and safe storage of all digital files

  • Prepare files as specified in the Company's 'Design and Production Notes' which details preferences, file sizes, naming etc.
  • Ensure safe storage of all digital files.
  • Supply PDF/TIF/PEG/EPS files of covers and layouts for sales materials and customer review as required.

Print-ready files

  • Prepare and supply files for print.

Review and correct proofs

  • Check in-house and customer proofs for colour and accuracy in association with the Company and detail instructions for correction.
  • Revise digital files as appropriate
  • Ensure colour and accuracy etc for Ozzalids/plotters, verification samples, proof dummies, advances and final consignment.

Necessary qualifications:

 

  • Must have relevant design experience
  • Experience within novelty/picture books a bonus however not essential.
  • Knowledge of Quark, Illustrator and Photoshop required.
  • Fluent in English
