Bonnierförlagen chooses paper with the environment in mind
Swedish book publisher Bonnierförlagen has taken a big step in reducing emissions by choosing paper only from Lessebo Paper for its picture books and illustrated nonfiction that are printed on uncoated paper.
The paper offers a more environmentally friendly alternative that generates a minimal amount of emissions compared with many other similar papers..
Eva Hansén, head of production at Bonnierförlagen says:
“We are engaged constantly with the issue of reducing the carbon footprint of our books at Bonnierförlagen. Lessebo paper makes a real difference and marks a new milestone actually in the industry’s environmental initiatives. It is particularly gratifying that our owner, Bonnier Books, has been a driving force behind the development of the paper – it sends a clear signal how much the environment is prioritized within the entire publishing group.
The paper is designed to offer a superior reading experience with its high opacity and pleasing surface. It also gives a sense of thickness and weight to the books. During the spring, a lot of books were printed on this paper and after evaluating and further refining the paper quality, Bonnierförlagen is taking the next step to use this paper for all its illustrated books that are printed on uncoated paper. This means the book publisher can produce beautiful books worthy of reading while at the same time taking an important step in reducing its emissions.
“The paper from Lessebo Paper is the future choice for both large and small publishers. At a relatively low cost, emissions can be sharply reduced. The cost is well worth the environmental savings achieved. One metric ton of paper generated 25 kg CO2 during the production process, which is significantly lower than the European average, “ says Eva Hansén.
Bonnierförlagen has for many years printed all its books on FSC-certified paper. This means that the lumber used in the paper production comes from certified and responsible forestry management that takes into account people as well as the environment. Lessebo paper is also FSC certified and produced using renewable energy. It is in fact the only paper in the world to receive Cradle to Cradle® Gold-certification.
Among the titles printed on the new paper are Det växer saft och sylt överallt (juice and jam grows everywhere) by My Feldt, Grilla (grilling) by Tareq Taylor and Pojkarna på sommarön (the boys on summer island) by Lars Lerin.
